2003 Narkoojee Cabernet Sauvignon
Gippsland, Victoria, AUSTRALIA
RATING: 96 VALUE: CELLAR: 5 - 8 years (2010 - 2013)
ALC/VOL: 14.00% TASTED: 29 Oct 2005
A superb example of Cabernet...
Growing Cabernet Sauvignon in a cool climate like
Gippsland is a precarious occupation. The varietal is
prone to exhibit vegetal / green bean aroma and flavour
when the grapes are not fully ripened. These
characteristics, coupled with the more aggressive tannin
structure natural to Cabernet, only become accentuated
with time in the bottle making for a difficult drinking
experience. On the other hand, when Cabernet is cropped
at low levels and allowed to fully ripen, the fruit
flavours that result are often astonishing. The fruit
for this wine was picked in early May after a warm and
dry season resulting in wonderful ripe fruit flavours
and sophistication of style.
Opaque deep black crimson colour, with deep crimson hue.
Lifted, perfumed nose of spice, liquorice, blackcurrant,
violets and dark chocolate. The palate has excellent
length and depth. Flavours of cedar, cigar box and
blackcurrant emerge over a fine dry chalky tannin
background. A refined style, showing elegance and
perfect balance. Very long aftertaste of blackcurrant,
spice and white pepper.

2004 Narkoojee Reserve Chardonnay
Gippsland, Victoria, AUSTRALIA
RATING: 95 VALUE: CELLAR: 3 - 4 years (2008 - 2009)
ALC/VOL: 14.00% TASTED: 29 Oct 2005
A superb Gippsland Chardonnay
Narkoojee is a tiny vineyard located at Glengarry, 15
kilometres north of Traralgon in Gippsland. The first
vines were planted in 1980 on a half acre plot in deep,
fertile alluvial soil. In order to achieve optimum
levels of ripeness, the Lyre Bird Trellis system has
been employed, which ensures the maximum exposure of
fruit to sunlight. With careful vineyard management, the
cool climatic conditions of the region allow both red
and white varieties to develop complex flavour profiles
not found in warmer climes.
Bright straw colour with pale straw hue. Complex, lifted
nose of hazelnut, cashew, biscuit and yeast lees with
melon and fig end notes. The palate is refined and
mouthfilling, supported by a good acid backbone. Creamy
palate texture. Flavours of biscuit, cashew, hazelnut
and honeycomb emerge. Long aftertaste of honeycomb,
hazelnut, cashew and yeast lees with citrus lingering.
